Everything you need to teach Croatian to families — from your first profile photo to your first payout.
Getting started
Open the app, go to Account → Teach with us, and fill in your display name, a short description, what you specialise in, and your timezone. It takes about five minutes.
Your application is read by a person. You will hear back either way.
Three things have to be true before families can see you: your application is approved, your identity is verified through Stripe, and your payouts are set up. The Teaching screen shows you which of those are still outstanding — it names the actual blocker rather than saying “pending”.
A photo is the single biggest reason a family books a tutor. A card showing initials and a price is not a person, and parents do not book strangers to teach their children.
We check every photo before it appears. That usually takes less than a day. If it is not approved you will be told why, and you can upload another.
Optional, and the strongest thing on your profile. Up to 90 seconds. Filming on your phone is completely fine.
What works:
After uploading, Cloudflare processes the video for a minute or two before it can be watched. Then we watch it before it goes live.
Optional. Many excellent tutors have none, and it will not stop you being listed.
Add the certificate name, who issued it and the year, then upload the document — a photo or a PDF, up to 10 MB, up to six certificates.
We check that the name on the document matches the name on your profile, and that it says what you say it says. Families then see the certificate name with a tick. They never see the document itself.
You set your own price for a 50-minute lesson, anywhere from $5 to $200, and you can change it whenever you like from Teaching → Your rate.
Croatia My Love keeps 15%. At $29 you keep $24.65. At $40 you keep $34.00. The screen shows what you keep while you type.
Lessons already booked keep the price they were booked at, so a change never affects anyone who has already paid.
Teaching → My availability. Tap the hours you can teach. You are shown your own timezone; families see theirs.
Only offer hours you would genuinely be glad to teach. A family booking a Saturday morning slot expects you there, and cancelling is far worse for them than the slot never existing.
Most families look for after-school and weekend times. If you are in Croatia teaching US families, the useful hours are probably your evening.
Payouts run through Stripe. You will be asked for your bank details and identity documents by Stripe directly — we never see or store them.
Until payouts are active you will not appear to families, because we cannot let someone book a lesson we could not pay you for.
If you started Stripe onboarding and closed the tab before finishing, the Teaching screen has an Already done? Check again button that re-checks your status.
Teaching safely
An adult from the family is present for every lesson. This is not a formality and it is not negotiable.
It is also the thing that protects you. A tutor who is never alone with a child cannot be accused of what happens when someone is.
If the supervising adult is not there, or leaves partway through, end the lesson politely and tell us. You will not be penalised for ending a lesson for this reason.
No phone numbers, emails, messaging handles, social profiles or addresses — not given, not asked for, not accepted. Not in a lesson, not in your video, not in your profile.
If a family asks for your number, say no and tell us. They are almost never trying to do anything wrong; they are trying to be friendly, or to save money. Either way the answer is the same.
Never move a lesson to Zoom, WhatsApp, Meet or anywhere else, even if the connection is poor. If our room is not working, end the lesson and tell us.
The Join button appears 10 minutes before the start time.
Do not record, screenshot or photograph a lesson or a learner, and do not ask a learner to.
Children sometimes say things to a friendly adult they have not said to anyone else. If a learner discloses or hints at harm:
Telling us does not replace any legal duty you may have where you live, and nothing in our rules stops you contacting the police or a child protection service directly at any time.
Every completed lesson has a Something went wrong with this lesson link. Use it for anything: a family that made you uncomfortable, a request to move off the platform, a technical failure, or a safeguarding concern.
Reports about a learner's safety are looked at immediately. Others are handled in order.
If a report is made about you, your listing may be suspended while we look into it. Suspension is not a finding that you did anything wrong. We will tell you it has happened, and why, unless telling you would get in the way of the investigation or put someone at risk. Lessons you have already taught are still paid.
Running your lessons
The Live tab shows your next lesson first. Ten minutes before the start time a green Join lesson button appears with a countdown.
Be there first. A family arriving to an empty room does not know whether to wait.
Stay in the room for 15 minutes. Some families lose track of the timezone, and some children take a while to be persuaded into the chair.
If nobody arrives, report the lesson so we know what happened. Do not just leave.
Cancel only when you genuinely cannot teach. A cancelled lesson is refunded to the family in full.
Cancelling repeatedly, or at short notice, is the fastest way to lose a family — and families here talk to each other. Many are related.
If you know you will be away, pause your listing instead. See below.
A lesson marks itself complete three days after it ends. There is no button to press and nothing to chase.
Those three days are the window in which either you or the family can report a problem with the lesson. Once it closes, the lesson confirms itself and payment is released.
If you would rather not wait, there is a Done — pay me now option on a finished lesson. It is optional.
Getting paid
The Teaching screen shows two numbers, and they answer different questions:
Held money is not at risk. It becomes yours when the lesson completes.
Stripe then moves it to your bank on its own schedule, usually a couple of days.
You are an independent contractor, not an employee. We do not withhold tax and you are responsible for reporting and paying whatever you owe where you live.
US tutors earning over $600 in a year will receive a 1099. Tutors outside the US should expect to handle their own reporting locally.
We cannot give tax advice. If you are unsure, ask an accountant in your own country — it is usually a short and inexpensive conversation.
Managing your listing
These are different and it matters which you choose.
Pause stops new bookings. You disappear from search, your profile is kept exactly as it is, and lessons already booked still go ahead. Use it for a holiday, exams, a busy month. Unpause whenever you like.
Leave removes your profile. You cannot leave while you have lessons booked — cancel them first and those families are refunded in full. Earnings already released still reach your bank, and your teaching history is kept for your records.
After a lesson, a family can leave a rating out of five and a comment. We read every review before it appears.
Your star rating is not shown until you have three published reviews. Before that, families see how many lessons you have taught. An average of one opinion tells nobody anything, and a new tutor should not look badly rated simply for being new.
A review that names a child, or that is really a safety report, is not published — it is handled separately.
Everything is under Account → Teaching: photo, intro video, certificates, rate, availability, and pause or leave.
A changed photo or video goes back into review before families see the new one. The old one stays up in the meantime, so your profile is never blank.
Anything else
Use the report button on a lesson for anything to do with that lesson.
For everything else, email us. We are a small team, so you are talking to a person and not a queue.
Anything concerning a child's safety is looked at immediately. Do not sit on it, and do not worry about being wrong.
